Mark Dayton Metal Detecting Story Incredible Gold Finds and Detectorist Journey
Mark Dayton’s journey started at age 9 after spotting a metal detector on a Radio Shack box that promised buried treasure. That Christmas he got his first machine, and a few years later everything changed. While hiking in the hills, he grabbed his detector and headed back out to the spot, uncovering an 1800s blacksmith site where his first standout find was a cast iron stove door he still owns today along with that original machine.
By 1985, Mark was detecting seriously. After buying his first machine with his own money, a Whites 5900 Di Pro, he quickly progressed through advancing technology. Discovering the Minelab Sovereign in 1997 was a turning point, opening the door to multi-tone hunting and leading him through a long line of top detectors including the CTX 3030 and Manticore.
Mark is known for some incredible finds, especially the moment he recovered three 1870s $20 gold coins from a single hole. That discovery changed everything for him on YouTube as his following grew rapidly, with people drawn to his finds and eager to hear his insights, and he has continued to build on that ever since.
One of his most unforgettable moments came on his birthday when a signal turned into a 4 ounce gold nugget in his hand. A perfect reminder that every hunt still holds the potential for something extraordinary.
Mark’s story is built on persistence, experience, and the thrill of the next signal. Now, he spends his time detecting, sharing his finds, and teaching others how to enjoy the hobby.
